Diabetes And Fruits – The Love – Hate Relationship!

There are many myths and misconceptions that hover a Diabetic . One such dietary ambiguity is the allowance of fruits in a diabetic diet. Fruits as we all know are natural supplements of infinite nutrients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre and many other discovered and undiscovered health savvy components. Fruits are a natural source of sugar (fructose) and this is where the confusion starts.

  • Fruits have a varied amount of fructose, which determines its capacity to influence the blood sugar, also called Glycemic index.
  • However it is imperative to understand that along with fructose, fruits also contain fibre, which helps in causing a slow release of sugar in the blood.
  • Most of the fruits have a low to medium glycemic index and thus if eaten in the correct portion, form and appropriate time of the day can actually help in achieving not only optimum blood sugar levels but also deal with other associated problems like obesity, hypertension and cardiac risks which are common features of a diabetic profile.

So there is no reason to shy away from these colourful ‘Fighters’ that can actually help to deal with the Silent killer called “Diabetes” while also improving your wellness quotient in the long run!
