Flaxseed – The Wonder Seed!

Flax seeds also called Linseed seeds are brownish flat seeds, believed to be native to Egypt and used worldwide as an antidote to many health ailments.

These seeds are small bundles of powerful nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids, lignans (phytonutrients with antioxidant properties) fibre, Niacin, calcium and phosphorus.

Health Benefits:

  • Flaxseeds are rich in a combination of super nutrients, viz Omega 3 fats, fibre and lignans. They decrease LDL cholesterol (bad) and increase HDL cholesterol (good) and also reduce the risk of diabetes, stroke, metabolic syndrome and certain cancers.
  • It helps Diabetics to achieve good glycemic control by regulating blood sugars.
  • Flax also helps prevent constipation and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Flaxseeds are proven to improve bone and skin health and aid weight loss.

Flaxseeds can be used in salads, combined with dried fruits into healthy bars, added to smoothies, spreads, yoghurt, health drinks, bread, cookies, breakfast cereals, mixed with other ingredients as a mouth freshener or simply consumed in its natural form with water.

The most beneficial way to consume Flax is in a mildly roasted, coarsely ground form for better digestibility, to aid maximum nutrient absorption and avoid passage of whole seeds in the undigested form.

Whatever the form of consumption, Flaxseeds will surely improve the health quotient of your diet!
