Sodium and salt, are they the same? Most people often think they are the same and there is no difference. But, they aren’t the same.

Sodium is a mineral that occurs in nature. It is an essential mineral in the human body needed to perform various life functions. It is a crucial element to maintain the balance of fluid in and around the body cells.

Salt (NaCl) is a naturally occurring compound that consists of 40% Sodium and 60% Chloride. The recommended daily allowance of sodium is 2300 mg of sodium, equivalent to one teaspoon (5gms) of salt.

Most of the natural food items contain sodium but about ninety percent of the sodium we eat comes from the salt in our diet. Packaged convenience foods usually have a greater amount of sodium in them mostly used either as preservatives to improve their shelf life or just to play around with the taste buds of humans, as it is addictive.

Remember, though sodium is an important component in life functions anything in excess can lead to an array of health complications.

Shake off your salt to set your sodium right!
