Bread – Discover a healthier slice of life!

Today’s dietary practices are on a fast track, loaded with processed and convenience food. On top of the list is the entire range of bread. But do you know your bread or are you just getting into the marketing trap?

Types of Bread:

White Bread – The bread is made with highly refined wheat flour. The germ and bran are removed from the wheat berry.  Sometimes flour is bleached to get the white colour. It is extremely low in vitamins, minerals and fibre and hence needs to be fortified as per the food laws.

Brown Bread – The bread is made with lesser-refined wheat flour than white bread. The germ and fibre are removed partially. Sometimes colouring agents like coffee, molasses (a type of sugar) are added to get its brownish colour. Although better than white bread, has still to be fortified with vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Wholemeal Bread – This type of bread is made with whole-grain keeping the wheat germ and bran intact. These are rich in vitamins and minerals and have natural fibre and hence fortification is not needed to a greater extent.

Granary Bread – As the name suggests it is slightly grainy in texture and made with different kibbled flour (kibble – grains that are ground coarsely to retain the nutritional value) with whole grains. It can also be a mixture of different grains. Depending on the brand it may or may not be fortified.

Multigrain Bread – It is a type of bread with a mix of grains like wheat, barley, millets, oats, rye, flax and others. It may be made with wholemeal or refined flour. Normally this kind of bread has high fibre, vitamins and minerals due to its grain mix.

Choose your bread wisely, depending upon the culinary use, like bread loaves or slices are used in various breakfast preparations, breadcrumbs are used for the crunchiness or to provide thickness, can be used in sweet and savoury puddings and desserts.

Pick wholemeal bread with added nuts, seeds and kibbled grains that add extra nutrients and overall taste.

Bread has become a staple across various economic strata and global cuisines, however using the right variety is of utmost importance!
