With a plethora of information on healthy eating that we come across today, every few months a food consumed for ages is suddenly stabbed by fad diets and proven guilty to cause a host of health problems. Wheat is one of the foods under the latest scrutiny, which surprisingly has been a staple for hundreds of years around the world.

The cultivation of wheat was started some 10,000 years ago, with its origin being traced back to southeast Turkey. Wheat is a source of multiple essential nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins (75-80% gluten), fibre, manganese, and phosphorus along with significant amounts of other B vitamins.

The big deal about Gluten:

The protein component of wheat “Gluten” is being alleged to make Wheat unpopular. However, the truth is that there are many other grains that contain gluten as a component like barley, rye, spelt to name a few. Only 1 % of the total world population is sensitive to Gluten (Celiac Disease) and should omit Gluten from the diet. But then how is it that a gluten-free diet has gained its popularity overnight?

Refined wheat flour has become the base ingredient in most of the convenience/fast foods that are also loaded with salt, sugar, fat, and sodium-based preservatives and lack gut-healthy nutrients. So when people omit wheat from their diet, they actually omit a lot of foods like pizza, pasta, white bread, biscuits, burgers, waffles, which ultimately makes them feel lighter and lose weight. The success, however, is attributed to a so-called “Gluten-free diet”.

So let’s just stop WHINING OVER WHEAT!
