Rice is often ridiculed to result in poor blood sugar management and hence considered a taboo for Diabetics. Its time to dust off this controversy from the character of this ancient staple. For starters, Rice falls in the category of moderate glycemic index foods. It is also important to understand that different varieties of rice would influence the glycemic index differently, for eg: consumption of brown or unpolished rice is a better choice over polished white rice.

It is also important to ponder that, is rice ever consumed as a single food all by itself in any given meal?  Rice is usually combined with either pulses/lentils or an animal protein source or veggies by the side, which decreases the glycemic index of rice naturally as these foods add fibre and protein to the meal in totality. So for a diabetic who maintains an active lifestyle and good blood sugar control, relishing rice in the given amounts and combinations won’t cause any damage.
