In today’s modern-day scenario, each one is striving to do the best to stay healthy and fit. In the bargain we end up trying to emulate and incorporate the latest dietary practices which look fancy, give quick results and suit us, but we usually ignore the simple information that is not so popular, gives long-term results, and hence a little cumbersome as compared to the quick fixes. So here we discuss a few NUTRIENT FRENEMIES that you should be aware of to ensure you derive optimum benefits from your food!
TANNINS
Tannins are a group of bitter, astringent compounds of plant origin that have anti-nutritional properties and may inhibit the protein digestibility, absorption of iron, and other micronutrients if consumed in excess.
They are commonly found in tea, coffee, betel nuts, pomegranates, most berries, grapes, red wine, chocolate (with a high cocoa content), spices (cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, thyme).
Tannins, however, in small amounts are known to have beneficial effects on the gut, immune health, and lipid metabolism, but they tend to affect the nutritional quality of food if consumed in large amounts. The tannin content of foods can be decreased by soaking or boiling.
So kick your habit of consuming excessive tea or coffee especially with your meals. As the adage goes “less is more”, keeping your nutrient frenemies in moderation is a wiser bet in the long run.
