Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of the Cinnamon tree. A common spice with an Asian origin, it has also been used for medicinal purposes in ancient Egypt. Cinnamon is used mainly for its aroma, flavour and health benefits and beats many other spices in this respect.

Cinnamon owes its Super Spice attributes to its active component called ‘Cinnamaldehyde’ and a battery of antioxidants namely the polyphenols.

Cinnamon is available in two types:

  • Ceylon cinnamon, which is actually the true cinnamon, majorly produced by Sri Lanka, is lighter in colour, sweeter in taste and has better nutritional qualities.
  • Cassia cinnamon, a native to Indonesia, is commonly available, darker in colour, bitter to taste and has some toxic compounds which if consumed in large amounts may have harmful effects on health in the long run.

Health Benefits:

  • It has antioxidant properties and prevents cell damage caused by various lifestyle factors.
  • Cinnamon helps in reducing blood sugars and prevents Diabetes by improving the potency and function of the hormone Insulin (important for glucose metabolism).
  • It also helps in supporting treatment of Polycystic Ovary Disease, as insulin resistance (which means that Insulin becomes non-functional) is one of the major hallmarks of PCOD.
  • Cinnamon helps in reducing the risk of heart diseases as it decreases the bad cholesterol and increases the good cholesterol.
  • It helps to fight against bacterial and fungal infections thus improving immunity.

Cinnamon undoubtedly has excellent health benefits, but in excess can cause side effects like low blood sugars, mouth sores, breathing problems. A very small dosage on a daily basis is just enough to help you get to your health goals.

Cinnamon can be used in various ways to add aroma and flavour in desserts, puddings, bread, herbal infusions/teas, detox juices, added to coffee, granola, oats/porridges, gravies, rice and meat preparations.

Be wise to use this spice and its benefits ought to leave you mesmerized!
