Chia Seeds – Super Power Food!

Chia seeds are amongst the top in the ranking of the ‘Superfood’ or the ‘Functional Food’ category as they provide a positive effect on health, beyond basic nutrition.

Chia seeds are tiny brownish seeds that were once a major food crop in Mexico and Guatemala. They were cultivated as early as 3500 BC and even offered to Aztec Gods. Chia means ‘Strength’ in Mexican and was a dietary staple in ancient times.

Chia seeds are power-packed with nutrients. They are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and antioxidants. They are also a potent source of omega-3 fatty acids (polyunsaturated fats) and fibre.

Health Benefits:

  • Chia seeds are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health (lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, regulating heart rhythms).
  • The fibre in Chia seeds is mainly soluble fibre and mucilaginous in nature. Its water-absorbing quality helps to maintain gut health, gives a feeling of fullness, prevents blood sugar spikes and aids in weight loss.
  • Chia seeds are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the body.

Chia seeds can be consumed in its whole and raw form, ideally after soaking (it swells up and gives a gelatinous texture), they don’t need grinding, unlike flax seeds.

Chia seeds do not have any distinctive flavour, hence are easy to be included in various preparations. They can be sprinkled on salads, soups, smoothies, and breakfast cereals. They can also be added to bakery items, shakes, puddings, sauces, juices or simply consumed in water. Chia seeds can be made into chia gel, chia sprouts or used to replace eggs in baking.
