Metabolic Syndrome is the term used for a cluster of risk factors like abdominal obesity, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and hypertension resulting in serious health problems like Diabetes and Heart Diseases.

The Mayo clinic guidelines define metabolic syndrome as having THREE or more of the following traits, including (traits) markers for which you’re taking medication to control:

  • Large waist — A waistline that measures at least 35 inches (89 cms) for women and 40 inches (102 cms) for men
  • High triglyceride level — 150 mg/dL (1.7mmol/L) or higher in the blood
  • Reduced “good” or HDL cholesterol — Less than 40 mg/dL (1.04 mmol/L) in men or less than 50 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) in women of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol
  • Increased blood pressure — 130/85 millimetres of mercury (mm Hg) or higher
  • Elevated fasting blood sugar — 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) or higher

All these factors are interrelated, form a vicious circle and eventually boil down to unhealthy lifestyle practices.

Here are a few lifestyle changes to treat/prevent this disorder:

  • It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet that is low in refined foods, rich in healthy fats and fibre and has a variety of fruits and veggies.
  • It is imperative to follow an exercise routine best suited to an individual for at least 40-60 mins/day for 5-6 days/week.
  • Cessation of smoking and reduction of Alcohol intake will decrease the oxidative stress on the vital organs.
  • Keeping stress at bay with relaxation techniques like pranayama/meditation, engaging in a hobby or simply taking time off from busy work schedules can help a long way.

The best treatment, however, would be to identify the risk factors at the earliest, take punitive measures and follow a goal-based plan to treat the same.
